Fitness-for-Service (FFS) Assessment
Petromaster provides comprehensive Fitness-for-Service (FFS) Assessment solutions to evaluate the structural integrity, reliability, and continued safe operation of in-service equipment containing flaws or damage. A Fitness-for-Service assessment is a quantitative engineering evaluation that determines whether equipment can continue operating safely without compromising performance, safety, or regulatory compliance. By accurately assessing existing damage and predicting future performance, Petromaster helps clients optimize maintenance strategies, extend equipment service life, reduce unnecessary replacement costs, and maintain operational reliability.
Our Fitness-for-Service assessments are performed in accordance with the internationally recognized API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1 standard. Depending on the complexity of the damage and available inspection data, our engineering team performs Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 assessments, ensuring the most appropriate and cost-effective evaluation for each asset. These assessments incorporate detailed inspection data, operating conditions, material properties, corrosion morphology, crack dimensions, stress analysis, and advanced engineering calculations to provide accurate and reliable recommendations.
Damage Mechanisms Evaluated by Fitness-for-Service
Petromaster's Fitness-for-Service specialists evaluate a comprehensive range of damage mechanisms affecting critical industrial equipment, including:
- Brittle Fracture
- General Metal Loss
- Localized Metal Loss
- Pitting Corrosion
- Hydrogen Blisters
- Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC)
- Stress-Oriented Hydrogen Induced Cracking (SOHIC)
- Weld Misalignment
- Shell Distortion
- Crack-Like Defects
- High Temperature Creep Damage
- Fire Damage
- Dents, Gouges, and Dent-Gouge Combinations
- Laminations
- Fatigue Damage
Our engineering evaluations provide reliable recommendations for continued operation, repair, monitoring, or replacement based on internationally accepted Fitness-for-Service methodologies.
API 579 / ASME FFS-1 Assessment Levels
Petromaster performs Fitness-for-Service evaluations according to the three assessment levels defined by API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1, selecting the appropriate level based on equipment criticality, damage severity, and available inspection data.
Level 1 Assessment
Level 1 provides a rapid engineering evaluation using simplified analytical methods and conservative acceptance criteria. It is primarily used for preliminary screening, routine assessments, or situations where inspection information is limited, allowing quick decisions regarding equipment fitness for continued service.
Level 2 Assessment
Level 2 involves more detailed engineering calculations and incorporates additional inspection data, operating conditions, and material properties. This assessment is suitable when greater accuracy is required or when specific damage mechanisms require more comprehensive evaluation.
Level 3 Assessment
Level 3 is the most advanced Fitness-for-Service evaluation and utilizes sophisticated engineering techniques such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA), fracture mechanics, advanced stress analysis, and extensive non-destructive testing (NDT) data. This level is applied to highly critical equipment, complex damage scenarios, and situations requiring the highest level of engineering confidence. Petromaster enhances these assessments with advanced computational methods and customized engineering solutions to deliver accurate, code-compliant recommendations.
